Digital Service Design & Innovation Lab

Overview

The logic of value creation is shifting from isolated product offerings toward data-rich, AI-enabled service ecosystems. Servitization and digital transformation – fueled by breakthroughs in Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, and platform technologies – are reshaping business models, organizational structures, and human work. As more value is embedded in digital services and data flows, organizations must master both the technical design of these services and the governance of multi-actor collaborations that bring them to market.

Simultaneously, digitalization unlocks unprecedented modes of user interaction and co-creation. Voice assistants, sensor-equipped mobile devices, and context-aware algorithms let firms move from “one-size-fits-all” solutions to deeply personalized experiences, demanding human-centered innovation at every step.

Research Topics

In the Digital Service Design & Innovation Lab we tackle this dual challenge through two intertwined streams:

  1. Data Ecosystems & Sustainable Value Co-Creation – We develop strategies for data sharing and how to operationalize them, design circular economy-platforms, study IoT-based multi-actor business models, and explore how AI can help orchestrate value creation across entire service ecosystems.

  2. Digital Innovation & Transformation – We craft practitioner-ready toolkits for SMEs, study how digital technologies reshape work and engagement, and prototype multi-agent AI systems that accelerate innovation in teams and start-ups.

By treating technological advancement and the human perspective as inseparable design inputs, our research delivers theories, methods, and artifacts that help organizations build competitive, sustainable, and people-centered digital services.
